What Martial Arts Style Is Right For You?

There are hundreds of martial arts styles out there.  Chinese styles, Japanese styles, Korean, Brazilian, the list goes on and on.  Some arts focus on kicking mostly, others on grappling/wrestling, and many on traditional stance work and self-defense. Being a Shaolin practioner I have the best of all worlds, in that it trains all methods.

What is a style than a pathway to start on a journey for self-improvement and learn the principles and method is trying to imbed in you.

In teaching shaolin, I start my students off with a style like Longfist to give them a strong foundation, after a period of time I will introduce Lohan and some Kempo self-defense.  Good well-rounded base, covering fluidity, counter fighting & reaction timing, speed & multiple striking.  Each student has their own particular style that speaks to them.  After earning their black sash we dive into 6-month segments exploring other styles.  Of course the student always feels this new style is the ONE, basically because its new… right, teachers out there, you have this experience right?

The point is the way I arrange my program is a student focused model to explore and give them an experience with different kung fu styles for them to find the right match for them.  Try Karate or TKD; try kung fu or Judo etc… Find your path or particular method that speaks to you.

Ask your self what are your goals in training in a martial art?
